The following summer, soon as the snow melted, we returned and set up camp at the Dominion Creek meadows. The following morning I saddled my horse and rode alone to the top of the pass to look over the other side. At the age of 14, I saw what was to shape the rest of my life. Since 1967, I have spent the majority of every summer outfitting and guiding people to one of the most magical places in the world. I have been under the spell of the Cariboo ever since that day!
Our base camp at Kruger Lake is just a few kilometres north of Indian Point Lake, one of the major lakes in Bowron Lake Park. It is the gateway to the true wilderness that lies to the north and northeast of this beautiful park. This is the last area of human habitation and once climbing on your horse to head up to the mountains, you will not encounter other persons save the ones in your group.
It is common to see moose, caribou, grizzly,
mountain goat and black bear and occasionally wolf, wolverine and coyotes.
Smaller animals, such as hoary marmots, Columbia ground squirrels and
picas are plentiful, as well as a wide variety of birdlife, including
golden eagles and hawks. At the right time of summer, the meadows
are strewn with wildflowers and the mountain streams, rivers and lakes
are so clear and clean that deep lakes look only several meters deep.
Stay in a cozy log cabin with wood heat and gas lamps; enjoy good conversations around the campfire, take a dip in a clear mountain lake, drink from fresh water streams and breath the clean mountain air while you enjoy the incredible Canadian wilderness scenery. |
