My name is Tim Cushman. I first came to the Bowron Lake area in 1961, with my parents Frank and Ruth Cushman, when they bought what is now Becker’s Lodge....located on the shore of Bowron Lake. The Bowron Lake chain is well known as a world class canoe/portage mecca.

In 1966, my father and I began to cut a horsetrail from the Bowron River Valley to Kruger Lake and then to the practically unknown mountains beyond. Because I had to return to school in September, I was unable to be there when he finally reached the summit of the first mountain pass.

The following summer, soon as the snow melted, we returned and set up camp at the Dominion Creek meadows. The following morning I saddled my horse and rode alone to the top of the pass to look over the other side. At the age of 14, I saw what was to shape the rest of my life.

Since 1967, I have spent the majority of every summer outfitting and guiding people to one of the most magical places in the world. I have been under the spell of the Cariboo ever since that day!

My son Bradey, born in 1983, has been making trips into the mountains with me since he was 4 years old. During the summer months, when he is not following the Professional Rodeo circuit, he helps with the guiding, packing and wrangling. He will one day take over the outfit.

Our base camp at Kruger Lake is just a few kilometres north of Indian Point Lake, one of the major lakes in Bowron Lake Park. It is the gateway to the true wilderness that lies to the north and northeast of this beautiful park.

This is the last area of human habitation and once climbing on your horse to head up to the mountains, you will not encounter other persons save the ones in your group.

Our week is spent traveling the various valleys or high mountain ridges that make up this isolated region of the Cariboo Mountains.

It is common to see moose, caribou, grizzly, mountain goat and black bear and occasionally wolf, wolverine and coyotes. Smaller animals, such as hoary marmots, Columbia ground squirrels and picas are plentiful, as well as a wide variety of birdlife, including golden eagles and hawks.

The scenery on these trips is breathtaking.

At the right time of summer, the meadows are strewn with wildflowers and the mountain streams, rivers and lakes are so clear and clean that deep lakes look only several meters deep.
The horses that we use for these trips have all been born and raised in this region by us. They are used to the mountainous terrain and sure footed. They like people and are gentle and patient with riders that lack horse experience. Although riding experience is an asset, it is not a necessity.

In today’s world of unbearable stress, daily deadlines and fast paced lifestyles, it is good to know there are still places you can go to that are untouched by all of this.
Wolverine Mountain Outfitters invites you to come and spend some time with us, to leave your cell phones, lap tops and worries behind and experience life as it was years ago.

Stay in a cozy log cabin with wood heat and gas lamps; enjoy good conversations around the campfire, take a dip in a clear mountain lake, drink from fresh water streams and breath the clean mountain air while you enjoy the incredible Canadian wilderness scenery.
